On Wednesday 2 June, the PTA awarded the Bono Pro Vivienda to one of our staff members whose projects include building their own home.

"The Bono Pro Vivienda has been created for those staff members who have as one of their objectives to build their own home and for various reasons beyond their control have not been able to obtain it," said Elizabeth Salazar Rodriguez, President of the PTA.

On this occasion the recognition was given to Monica María Giraldo Knutt, secretary of the Parents' Association, PTA, who has been working with them for 23 years. Monica could not hide her joy and gratitude when the "Bono Pro Vivienda" was presented to her by the PTA President, Elizabeth Salazar Rodriguez.

"I feel very happy, very proud, very joyful, thanking God, I also feel very blessed to be able to make my dream of housing come true" Monica told us.

This initiative has been going on for 8 years now and is possible thanks to the PTA, which allocates all the resources obtained through the CCB Festival and other activities.

We congratulate Monica and want to acknowledge the outstanding work of our PTA, always seeking to bring joy and warmth to our CCB Community.

The Exhibition 2021 will be held on Wednesday 2 June, an event that will take place entirely online and will be coordinated by Claudia Fayad, CCB's PYP Coordinator, Diane Carcello, Primary's Head of Section, and the following Primary teachers: Juliana Ostheimer, Keyko Vega and Marlon Chamorro and Jonathan Wallis. It will be attended by 69 students who will present 21 projects.

The Exhibition is the culmination of the IB's Primary Years Programme (PYP) and it's a time for our students to learn about teamwork, synthesising information, analysing sources, public speaking, conflict resolution and many other skills.

"In The Exhibition, students present what would be their first IB degree project, in which they can demonstrate everything they have learned throughout their years at PYP" said fifth grade teacher and The Exhibition coordinator, Juliana Ostheimer.

In this project, students choose a topic where they can have some kind of impact or make a change. From their enquiries, they generate an Action to contribute to the solution of this problem.

The topics were free, each group had the freedom to choose it under the guidance of the teachers. The group of Juan Martín Calero and Zhara Jaramillo, for example, chose Personal Growth as it was a topic that touched them directly.

"We chose a topic that we could apply to ourselves. To benefit ourselves as we work and share those benefits with others," Zhara told us.

The preparation for The Exhibition started in March when each student chose their group, chose a theme to work on, did all the research and created a website to show the results. Now, the students are preparing for the presentation on Wednesday.

"We have been practising what we are going to say so that we can interact with the audience and answer all their questions," said Juan Martin.

This work has been a challenge for the students as it tests everything they have learnt over the years. The children told us about the intensity of the work and the difficulties that the isolation period posed for them. Alicia Londoño from 5th grade told us about her experience.

"I had to be isolated many times and it was very difficult to work from home. We saw each other in Zoom every day. But when we finished the website and after the last corrections, I cried tears of joy" confessed Alicia.

We invite the whole CCB community to participate in The Exhibition 2021, visit the websites to see all the topics our students worked on and attend the Q&A next Wednesday, 2nd June starting at 6:00pm.

We look forward to seeing you!

Over the last few weeks, the city has been experiencing unusual and intense situations for many. The protests resulting from the national strike that began on April 28th have meant that we have had to leave our beloved campus for a few days.

On-site classes were suspended, and students and teachers have  stopped coming to the CCB. Most staff members started to work from home as well. However, among the entire educational community there is one section that has not ceased to be present at the School and has doubled its efforts: the Security Department.

This is why we want to highlight the work of our dear security guards, who have overcome the dangers that roam the streets of our beautiful Cali these days to provide their services and take care of the School. Cristian Camilo Castañeda, one of the guards of the main entrance, Gate 4, tells us a little of what he is feeling.

"I get stressed by thinking, and how the emotional situations have become a little bigger. You start to think about the situation in the city and time seems to pass more slowly," Cristian told us.

At times our fellow guards have found themselves close to these tight situations.  Paola Andrea Parra, monitoring guard, tells us how from the School itself she has heard the explosions caused by the protests.

"It's stressful, at night you hear explosions along the “Vía Panamericana”. And with what you hear about what is happening in the city, it makes you more tense," Paola told us.

To all this we have to add the difficulties that arise in terms of mobility and present fuel shortages.

"In terms of mobility it’s complicated, the blockades make you look for different routes. Take into consideration the lack and the high cost of fuel. I’ve had to stay at the School sometimes to save on gas," Cristian told us.

"Some days I have stayed, because of the problems of mobility and lack of fuel. It was better to stay than to risk it. There are other colleagues who have stayed as well," said Paola.

Despite these difficult circumstances, they are steadfast. They see the silver lining behind the gray clouds. They always look after what’s important to us, not only when we are inside the School but also when we have left. Every morning they greet us with a smile and kindness. They are the first to arrive and they are the ones who never leave. Thank you very much to them for their commitment and protecting our second home. They are a source of pride for CCB!

We would like to acknowledge by name each one of our brave guards at CCB. A thousand thanks!
